Hallo Carrasco et al.: Data models for version management of legislative documents

María Hallo Carrasco of National Polytechnic School, Ecuador, and Professor Dr. M. Mercedes Martínez-González and Pablo de la Fuente Redondo, both of University of Valladolid, have published Data models for version management of legislative documents, forthcoming in Journal of Information Science.

Here is the abstract:

This paper surveys the main data models used in projects including the management of changes in digital normative legislation. Models have been classified based on a set of criteria, which are also proposed in the paper. Some projects have been chosen as representative for each kind of model. The advantages and problems of each type are analysed, and future trends are identified.

Video is now available for the House Legislative Data and Transparency Conference, held 2 February 2012, in Washington, DC. The conference was hosted by the U.S. House of Representatives’ Committee on House Administration.

Presentations concerned metadata and dissemination standards and practices for U.S. federal legislative data, including open government data standards, XML markup, integrating multimedia resources into legislative data, and standards for evaluating the transparency of U.S. federal legislative data.

Speakers included Daniel Bennett of the e-Citizen Foundation, Tom Bruce of the Legal Information Institute, Daniel Schuman and Eric Mill of the Sunlight Foundation, Jim Harper of the Cato Institute, Joshua Tauberer of POPVOX and GovTrack, and Derek Willis of the New York Times.

Harper on a Legislative Process Data Model and XML Markup for Representing Legislative Data Types

Jim Harper, Esq., of the Cato Institute has posted a data model of the U.S. federal legislative process and XML markup for representing major types of U.S. federal legislative information, in his post entitled Helping the House Advance Data Transparency, at the Cato@Liberty blog.

McGrath: Towards a Bill Status Data Model

Sean McGrath of Proplyon has posted Towards a Bill Status Data Model, in The NIEM EDemocracy Initiative (NEI) Google Group.

In this post, Mr. McGrath sets out “5 possible approaches to a 50-state bill
status data model” for U.S. states. The post also contains descriptions of typical attributes of U.S. state legislative information systems relating to bill status. Mr. McGrath hopes this post will begin a conversation about a bill status data model.
