The Scope of the Legal Technology Hacking Movement

We track legal technology hacking events in this post.

By legal technology hacking events, we mean hackathons, design jams, and other meetings at which developers and designers engage in coding or other development activities leading to the creation of new legal technologies.

So far we’ve identified 12 legal technology hacking events that have taken place since 2011, and four more that are scheduled for the coming weeks.

The events include one held in 2011, four in 2012, and seven so far in 2013 (as of 21 September 2013).

These events have been or are scheduled to be held in Brazil, Canada, France, Switzerland, and the U.S.

Many of the events use the Twitter hashtag #legalhack

Some of these events are hosted by regularly meeting groups devoted to legal hacking, technology, or innovation.

If you know of any past or future legal technology hacking events that are missing from that post, please feel free to identify them in the comments to this post or that post.

We know that the term legal hacking is also being applied to events at which law reform proposals, but not legal technology, are developed (e.g., Harvard’s Legal Hackathon of February 2013). Our post does not cover law reform events.
